Introduction
|
|
| |
 |
During the VI Hotine-Marussi Symposium (May 29- June 2, 2006), Wuhan, many scientists from Asia working on superconducting gravimetry (SG) met to discuss a rotating workshop in Asia to promote SG research. The Taiwan SG team, which newly installed two SG meters, proposed to host the first workshop in Taiwan. The promotion of SG research includes, among others, exchange of gravity data, software, research personnel and inter-comparison of absolute gravimeters. The workshop is open not only to scientists in Asia, but also to scientists in the world.

|
 |
We will offer 3 free shuttle bus rides on March 11 to transport, participants from airport to SOL hotel, Hsinchu. The shuttle will
be departure at terminal 1 and terminal 2 at 13:00, 15:00, and 18:00 respectively. If you plan to take adbantage of this service, please contact our staffs waiting
in the terminal hall. (They will carry the sign labeled the title of workshop.)

How to get to Hsinchu
(update 02/13/07) |
|
|
 |
From CKS international airport to Hsinchu
Unfortunately, there is no direct public transportation
connecting the airport and Hsinchu right now. You may
make use of the airport taxi service (about 45 minutes
of driving); the fare is around 1600 NT dollars (charged
by the taximeter), which is about 45~50 U.S. dollars.
Most airport taxi drivers have the basic command of
English, but a print out of your hotel information can
be a good idea to indicate your destination. |

Public transportation
(update 02/13/07) |

Unlike the frustrating availability between the airport and HsinChu,
there are convenient bus services connecting airport and the capital city, Taipei.
On the other hand, the bus route from Taipei to Hsinchu is quite convenient too.
If taxi does not sound like a great choice for you, you may think about stop at
Taipei first then connect your travel to Hsinchu through Taipei.
From airport to Taipei

The
stop of King Bus outside the terminal of airport
You
can find the bus stop at the corner of the terminal
following the direction (link terminal 1, link terminal 2).
The King Bus is one of the services who operate the route
from the airport to Taipei. The service is operated at 15 to
20 minutes and it would take 40 to 60 minutes to get to
Taipei -depending on the highway traffic condition. The
tickets are sold at the booth aside the stop. The fare is
125 NT dollars (about 3 US dollars) one way trip to Taipei.
The driver will check your ticket when you aboard and return
you the ticket stub. Be sure to keep the stub and return
back to the driver when you get off at your destination. The
last stop of this route would be the Taipei main station
where you can get access to the main bus station, train
station and the city subway station. You may take either bus
or train to Hsinchu from there
.

station can be seen in the background (left). The tickets to
Hsinchu are sold at the booth (right).
From Taipei to Hsinchu

The
colonial style architecture of Hsinchu train station
The
bus (KingBus) to Hsinchu would launch at the main bus
station every 20 minutes (figure). The fare is 130 NT
dollars one way to Hsinchu and can be purchased at the booth
in the hall of main bus station. The driver will check your
ticket when you aboard and return you the ticket stub. Be
sure to keep the stub and return back to the driver when you
get off at your destination. It takes about 1 and half hour
to get to Hsinchu. You are advised to get off the last stop
–Hsinchu train station where is very close to the SOL hotel
(15 minutes of walking).

The
bus stop is around the vicinity of the red circle. The blue
line in the map is the ancient moat. The “Tung Men” city
square is the ancient remain of a gate.
From Taipei to Hsinchu by train
It is
quite convenient to get to Hsinchu by train. You may find

Date:
March 15, 2007 |

Geophysics Excursion
We have a major
overhaul on our excursion plan. In accordance with the
extension of our scientific sessions (from the original 2
days program well into 3 days now), the once proposed three
days tour is now cut short into a one day tour. However, it
is our treat this time –every one is welcome to join this
tour with no additional charge. We will departure from
Hsinchu in the morning on 15th March, heading
north to stop by the volcano gorge of Mountain Yang-Ming and
other nature attractions along the north coast. It is
expected that the tour to be dismissed at the capital city
Taipei around the dinner time. You may take a short cut to
the international airport from Taipei (about one hour bus
ride) after the tour, or stay with us all the way back to
Hsinchu that evening. Look forward to enjoy this quality
time with you.

18-Peak Mt. Tunnel facility
|
|
|
 |
Tunnel B of the
18-Peak Mt. houses two superconducting gravimeters, two FG5
gravimeters, one Graviton-EG relative gravimeter, one
seismometer and other geophysical sensors. These sensors are
in the service of Center for Geodesy and Gravimetry (COGG),
established by the Ministry of The Interior, Taiwan.
International collaborations using these instruments are
welcome. |
 |
Tunnel A, right
next to Tunnel B, will be the meeting venue. It is a 30-m
long, 5-m wide tunnel that is equipped with a meeting
facility. Outside of Tunnels A and B is a city park featuring blossoms in all seasons and treks for walking and
mountain climbing. |
